Artist: Chun SungMyung (천성명)
Korean artist Chun SungMyung (천성명) is an internationally renown sculpture famous for his visceral and surreal sculptures and installations.
The striking sculptures of Chun SungMyung often includes distorted figures with the artists face in absurd, fantastical situation. The result is a puzzling but impactful experience combining an immediate narrative response and an almost disturbing emotional impact. The fairytale like depictions challenge the audience by imposing a range of distressing emotions such; sombreness, panic, isolation and vulnerability. The photorealistic nature of the sculptures combines with the surrealist subjects to create a sense of uneasy uncanniness.
As is often the case with Surrealist art, Chun’s work is often dream-like, plunging into the artist’s psyche and exploring the darkest aspects of his consciousness. “For him,” a previous artist statement says, "looking deep into himself as a metaphor for the people of this age has been a consistent theme since the beginning of his career. To depicting the journey of exploring the inner self, he has developed his own distinctive style of placing realistic sculptures within a theatrical plot.”
One of his recent exhibitions has an non-linear overarching narrative of "the story of dark night through dawn, of three plots the artist has devised.” The viewer is challenged to order the works into a logical (used loosely) sequence.
Chun SungMyung studied at Suwon University and currently has work featured in SongEun Art Storages exhibition Not Your Ordinary Art Storage until May 2018.
